Tempess

Christmas had come and gone. It had been almost two weeks since I had seen or heard from Truth after I allowed him to invade my body, but neither my mind nor body would allow me to forget it after he engraved his name like the tattoos etched in my skin. Forgetting him would be easier than admitting I had an attachment forming to Truth and the disappointment I felt every time I didn’t receive a text or call.

You let him play you.

The knock against my door managed to pull me from my thoughts and to focus on the last braid of Bryleigh’s thick tresses.

“Come in,” I called out.

Lee walked in looking comfortable in her Tropical Touches loungewear with the long knotless braids I had done swinging. She kissed both girls before making herself comfortable on my bed.

“What are we doing for your birthday? It’s a few weeks away, and every time that I mention doing something, you shut the idea down,” Aaliyah reminded. “Today we’re coming up with something so I can start planning.” I smiled and shook my head while I placed the clear beads on my baby’s braid.

“Lee, I told you I don’t care for celebrating my birthday. It’s another day.”

Birthdays were my least favorite to celebrate since mine only ever contained bad memories after Braden’s passing. Every year Boon would grow upset because I never wanted to celebrate or got excited about the gifts he bought. Her eyes rolled into a full circle.

“Nah, we’re celebrating you here, being alive, and turning twenty-four. Leave the planning to your big sister.”

“Please keep it low-key, Lee. I’on want anything big,” I pleaded because she would never settle for dinner and coming home.

“Fine.” She huffed. “We’re celebrating on Cairo’s dime.”

“He calls and checks in with you every day, Lee. Why are you even mad?” I asked.

“And? His family and home are here, not in Georgia running amuck!”

“Mommy, what’s running amuck, and why’s Uncle Cai doing it?” Bryleigh questioned as we giggled.

“Your auntie’s dramatic because your uncle has her spoiled.”

“Oh well. Let’s go, girls. We’re going shopping for this birthday extravaganza!” Aaliyah said, giddy with excitement. Bryleigh’s chestnut beams silently pleaded to go.

“You don’t want to stay with me, B?” I pouted. Her tiny arms wrapped around my neck as she kissed my cheeks.

“Mommy, I want to go shopping. I’ll be back,” she justified.

“Fine, as long as you promise to be back so I can tuck you in before work,” I said with my pinky intertwined with hers.

“Promise.” She planted another kiss on my cheek and ran after her cousin. My attention moved back to my sister.

“Lee, don’t go crazy buying either one of us anything since you did enough Christmas.”

“I’m breaking Cai’s bank until he goes broke.”

“We both know that’s not possible.”

“Hell, I’mma try,” she tossed over her shoulder and closed my door behind them.

Sighing, I fell back against my bed.

I can’t believe I let him in so easily.
